When Tomorrow Steals Today's Peace

How much of today have you ever spent worrying about tomorrow?

Not tomorrow itself.

Just the possibility of tomorrow.

Maybe you've replayed a conversation that hasn't happened yet.

Wondered how something was going to work out.

Tried to solve a problem before it even existed.

If you're anything like me, your mind can become incredibly creative when it comes to imagining all the ways something might go wrong.

The interesting part?

Most of those situations never happen the way we imagined.

Borrowing Tomorrow's Worries

This week I had a beautiful reminder of how often we try to solve tomorrow's problems before we've fully lived today.

This summer I began teaching private mahjong lessons. There has definitely been a learning curve, but I have discovered something wonderful along the way—I truly love teaching. Watching someone begin to understand the game brings me so much joy.

This past Friday was the start of a new beginners class. At the beginning of the week, I had three students registered, but there was one small problem.

The National Mah Jongg League cards I had ordered hadn't arrived yet.

I only had one card left from my previous class.

Although the first lesson doesn't actually require the card, my mind immediately jumped ahead.

"What if the cards still haven't arrived next week?"

Without realizing it, I had begun spending today's energy trying to solve tomorrow's problem.

Then life unfolded.

One student withdrew.

Another became ill and couldn't attend the first class.

Now there was one student and one card.

As the lesson progressed, she turned out to be a quick learner. We even began learning how to read the card together.

Everything I had worried about quietly resolved itself.

Not because I figured it out.

Not because I forced a solution.

Life simply unfolded exactly as it needed to.

We Want the Whole Map

Most of us find comfort in certainty.

We like knowing where we're going.

We want the entire roadmap before we take the first step.

Yet Spirit rarely works that way.

Instead, we're usually shown just enough to take the next step.

Once we've taken it, the next one appears.

Then the next.

It's a little like driving at night. Your headlights don't illuminate the entire journey. They reveal only a small stretch of road ahead. Yet somehow, mile after mile, you safely arrive at your destination.

Life often works the same way.

Trust Doesn't Mean Having All the Answers

One of the biggest misconceptions about trust is believing we won't feel uncertainty anymore.

Trust isn't the absence of uncertainty.

Trust is choosing to move forward anyway.

It's believing that today's guidance is enough for today.

It's recognizing that tomorrow's wisdom has a way of arriving tomorrow.

When we insist on having every answer before we begin, we unintentionally place ourselves in conflict with the very process life uses to guide us.

Returning to the Present

Whenever you notice yourself racing ahead, gently pause.

Take a slow breath.

Ask yourself:

"Is this a problem I need to solve today?"

If the answer is no, see if you can bring your attention back to what is in front of you.

Back to this conversation.

This task.

This meal.

This breath.

Peace is almost always found in the present moment.

Our anxiety usually lives somewhere else.

This Week's Invitation

Take a moment to reflect on these questions.

  • Where am I trying to solve tomorrow's problem today?
  • What future situation have I been rehearsing in my mind?
  • What is already enough for today?
  • What would change if I trusted that tomorrow's answers will arrive tomorrow?

You may discover that life has been supporting you all along.

As I reflected on my week, one thought kept returning.

"So far, Spirit has the wheel."

The more I sat with those words, the more I realized they weren't just about a mahjong class.

They were about every moment I've worried, planned, overthought, and tried to control an outcome that eventually unfolded in a way I never could have predicted.

Maybe that's what trust really looks like.

Not having every answer.

Simply believing that the next step will be there when it's time to take it.
