Learn how trusting your inner guidance can help you soften old protective walls and open your heart to love, joy, and new possibilities.
There are moments in life when building a wall around our heart feels like the most sensible thing we can do.
Someone hurts us.
We trust and are disappointed.
We take a chance and wish we hadn't.
We ignore that little feeling telling us something isn't quite right—and later find ourselves thinking, I knew it.
So we make a decision.
I'm not going to let that happen again.
And up goes another brick.
Sometimes we even become proud of those walls. We tell ourselves we've gotten smarter. Tougher. More careful.
Perhaps we have.
But there's an important question we don't always ask:
What else is the wall keeping out?
When we build a wall to protect ourselves from pain, we'd probably prefer that it came equipped with a very sophisticated security system.
Pain? Keep it out.
Disappointment? Definitely not allowed.
Love? Come right in.
Joy? Door's open.
Wonderful new opportunity? We've been expecting you!
Unfortunately, our walls don't usually work that way.
When we close ourselves off because we're afraid of being hurt again, we may also become reluctant to trust, try, receive, connect, or follow something new.
The wall we built because of yesterday's experience can begin making today's decisions.
And tomorrow's.
That's when protection can quietly become limitation.
This is where our relationship with our inner guidance becomes so important.
What if instead of trying to prevent every possible painful experience, we learned to trust ourselves to recognize what feels right for us and what doesn't?
There is a very different energy between:
I won't let anyone get close enough to hurt me.
and
I trust myself to notice when something doesn't feel right.
One comes from fear of what might happen.
The other comes from trust in who you are now.
Your inner guidance doesn't need to shout.
Sometimes it's simply that little hesitation you can't explain.
Sometimes it's a feeling of expansion.
Sometimes something looks absolutely perfect on paper, but something inside you keeps whispering, No.
And sometimes your logical mind can produce a hundred reasons why you shouldn't take a chance, while something deeper within you quietly says, Go.
The more familiar we become with that inner voice, the less we need fear to make our decisions for us.
This may be the piece we forget.
The wall was built by an earlier version of you.
Perhaps that version of you didn't recognize the warning signs.
Perhaps you didn't trust what you were feeling.
Perhaps you hadn't yet learned how to say no.
Perhaps you didn't know that you were allowed to change your mind.
Perhaps you were looking outside yourself for someone else to tell you what was right for you.
But you've lived since then.
You've learned.
You've grown.
You've had experiences that have helped you recognize your own wisdom.
So why would today's you need exactly the same protection yesterday's you created?
You can appreciate why the wall was built without deciding it needs to remain there forever.
Opening your heart isn't an invitation to ignore everything you've learned.
It doesn't mean blindly trusting everyone who comes along.
It doesn't mean saying yes when something inside you is clearly saying no.
In fact, I believe it can mean exactly the opposite.
Opening the heart allows us to deepen our connection with the part of ourselves that guides us.
Our Soul.
That inner wisdom.
The knowing that doesn't always come with a logical explanation but nevertheless feels true.
The more we trust that connection, the more we can move through life with an open heart and discernment.
We don't have to choose between being open and being wise.
Walls usually weren't built in a day, and we don't need to knock them down in one either.
Maybe today you simply notice one.
Notice something you've been saying no to automatically.
Notice where an old experience has become a rule for your future.
Notice when fear says, Don't do that. Remember what happened last time.
Then ask yourself:
Is this my inner guidance speaking—or is this an old wall trying to protect me?
You don't have to force an answer.
Get quiet.
Breathe.
Bring your awareness into your heart.
And listen.
My channeled meditation Opening Your Heart to Your Inner Power was created to help you do exactly that—to gently soften the energy around your heart and reconnect with the unconditional love, support, and guidance that are already available to you.
You don't have to force your heart open.
You can simply allow it to soften.
Perhaps one brick at a time.
Because maybe true safety isn't found behind the wall.
Maybe it comes from knowing that wherever life leads you, you can trust yourself to listen.
